MaskedAquaKitty:

My name is Mass Aqua Kitty and this is my Pokemon story.

David Hernandez:

Welcome to, as the Pokeball turns, where we interview people about their experience with Pokemon. My name is David Hernandez. And today, I'm joined by Mask Aqua Kitty. Welcome to the show.

MaskedAquaKitty:

Well, for having me.

David Hernandez:

Without a doubt, I was tempted just to call you Vaporeon. Is that kind of the inspiration behind your name?

MaskedAquaKitty:

yeah, just literally, it's, essentially the exact thing for my username.

David Hernandez:

why is the mask, like, where you, like, want to be a Vaporeon bandit?

MaskedAquaKitty:

I kind of like the, the designs of like, Masquerade Mask. And when I looked at Vaporeon, I'm literally looking at one right now. It kinda looks like it has a type of mask on it. It kinda has like two shades of color on it's face. It's got like the darker and then the lighter. If you look at just the lighter, it looks more like a mask. I don't know.

David Hernandez:

that's kind of cool. I never noticed that before. Now would this also like go into like other Pokemon like I'm thinking like maybe a Masquerain, of course and then Meowth Scearta. They both have those kind of masks too. Is it kind of similar to those?

MaskedAquaKitty:

Mouscarada is I saw that literally datamined. It was literally day, not, day zero, that thing being released. And I contacted NimaArt, it's being like, listen, I need this Pokemon. I need it. I, I need it. Like, this is literally, this is the perfect Pokemon. I love this Pokemon.

David Hernandez:

It's like it spoke existence into and he's like, oh

MaskedAquaKitty:

I need it. And then Masquerain, I like Masquerain. It doesn't get as much love because, you know, it's just a random Gen 3 Route 1 bug. But

David Hernandez:

Although I think I think they did screw up. I kind of wish they had kept it bug water like Surskit I hated that they gave the bug flying. I'm like why just make it keep a bug water. That would been cool

MaskedAquaKitty:

I agree with you on that.

David Hernandez:

Now, was it safe to say that, uh, when Pokemon Scarlet and Violet eventually came out, that you actually chose Miaskerata? Miaskerata, I'm definitely butchering its name. Did you choose the Masked Cat as the starter for Scarlet and Violet?

MaskedAquaKitty:

So I was, at the start, I was torn between Fuecoco and Sprigatito. I love cats if it wasn't obvious. And Grass is like my second favorite type. but Fuecoco was just so, it's so cool looking. It's really adorable. And then I saw what Sprigatito evolved into and went, I'm sorry, Fuecoco, you've been replaced.

David Hernandez:

Fui Coco! And it just has a little sad emoji, just seeing you walk off with, uh, Sprigakito. Oh

MaskedAquaKitty:

I mean, Rocco not, not Cock. That's the second one. Skeleton is a cool Pokemon, don't get me wrong. It's just like mascara is literally just perfect.

David Hernandez:

So, you had a lot of experience with Pokemon. So what was your first experience with the franchise? Like, where did this all start?

MaskedAquaKitty:

So, I think technically at the time that I was able to physically hold a Game Boy, I think, think it was Ruby and Sapphire were out. That was not my first game, my first game was actually Pokemon Blue. it was my first Pokemon game, I didn't really understand How to play Pokemon back then. The save button never existed, And I would always pick Bulbasaur. Bulbasaur is my favorite starter period. It's my first ever Pokemon. I have deep love for Bulbasaur and it's evolution line.

David Hernandez:

So you said the games, you know, you're playing during the Ruby Sapphire era, but you're playing Pokemon blue. You said you couldn't figure out how to save, or was it just the batteries dry at that point that you couldn't save at all?

MaskedAquaKitty:

I I I didn't figure out what the save button was.

David Hernandez:

So you restarted the game over and over and over.

MaskedAquaKitty:

Yes.

David Hernandez:

Wow, how far did you remember how far you ever got on one save file by chance?

MaskedAquaKitty:

Misty.

David Hernandez:

Oh my gosh, your poor soul. I'm sorry

MaskedAquaKitty:

Misty. This is what I was told because I was a little too young to remember this, but apparently I just kept the save button, what's that? Turn it off? Oh wait, where'd all my Pokemons go? Oh, looks like we're startin over.

David Hernandez:

Oh my gosh, that's crazy I guess that makes sense though, because I don't think a lot of games had that where you need to physically save Yeah, a lot of them autosave. That's crazy

MaskedAquaKitty:

Especially the original Pokemon Blue, which just didn't No luck for me there.

David Hernandez:

Did you get a chance to play the other generations at all

MaskedAquaKitty:

I think Emerald came out, and I got Emerald, so I completely skipped Gen 2. I actually have never finished Pokemon, Gold, Silver, Crystal. I have never finished that game. I played Heart Gold, Soul Silver. I've never finished Gold, Silver, and Crystal. But, I played, Emerald. I figured out what the save button was.

David Hernandez:

Hallelujah. Yes.

MaskedAquaKitty:

It was great. I was definitely that, kid back in the day who just only evolved their starter and focused on nothing else. I think I picked Sceptile back in the day. well, Treecko, but I think it was a Sceptile before even beating the first gym.

David Hernandez:

Oh gosh, you grinded that Pokemon out.

MaskedAquaKitty:

Yep. and then I realized, you know, just having a Sceptile, um, fire types

David Hernandez:

That's true. Flannery exists too.

MaskedAquaKitty:

So I had an Azumarill, and then that thing became the only thing I leveled up.

David Hernandez:

I'm noticing a pattern here.

MaskedAquaKitty:

Yeah, yeah That pattern went on to Gen 5. It was great

David Hernandez:

So have you played every single game since now? Up to present day,

MaskedAquaKitty:

yeah, I played every single main series game except I Technically still haven't finished Gold, Silver, and Crystal, but that's because I haven't had time to play the virtual console one.

David Hernandez:

What's your, uh, favorite generation?

MaskedAquaKitty:

Gen 4.

David Hernandez:

Gen four. Black. So that be diamond, pearl, and

MaskedAquaKitty:

Diamond and Pearl Platinum.

David Hernandez:

Wow, what is it about gen 4 that makes it your favorite?

MaskedAquaKitty:

It was the first, like, up and coming generation of a time that I could actually, like, remember this. So like, Gen 4 was coming out, I think I was in Elementary or middle school. Pokemon Diamond and Pearl was coming out. Like, they literally gave out bookmarks with the starters on it. I remember it.

David Hernandez:

That's awesome.

MaskedAquaKitty:

So, I have just memories more with Gen 4 because it was my first brand new generation coming out.

David Hernandez:

And you remember the save button this time.

MaskedAquaKitty:

Yes, mhm.And the pattern n continued. I picked Turtwig, and it was the only thing I leveled up.

David Hernandez:

Was it a, uh, Torterra by the time you got to the first gen as well,

MaskedAquaKitty:

I, that I don't remember.

David Hernandez:

Okay, fair enough, fair enough.

MaskedAquaKitty:

I just distinctly remember the route right before where the Whismur Cave is. I distinctly remember being in that grass for hours, leveling up a Treecko. That's why I remember that one. Turtwig, I think, just naturally got to Torterra.

David Hernandez:

So, you know, you talk about Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, you know, there's a lot of nostalgia with those games. What did you think of the remakes that came out?

MaskedAquaKitty:

Uh Oh god.

David Hernandez:

oh.

MaskedAquaKitty:

So, I actually like the chibi style. I know a lot of people don't, but I actually liked it because it reminded me more of the style of Diamond, Pearl, Platinum. Do I get that they could have done more? Yes. Because I played both Brilliant Diamond and Shiny Pearl. I have both Because I had to play through both of them because I shiny hunted Arceus for a year.

David Hernandez:

Oh, jeez.

MaskedAquaKitty:

I, so, my, uh, Memory with BDSP isn't the kindest considering the fact I was stuck on, what is it, Mt. Coronet for a year.

David Hernandez:

You went up the mountain then you saw the God of Pokemon for a year.

MaskedAquaKitty:

Yeah, I, most of my, earlier content is me shiny hunting that, what did I call it, deer stuck in a fence? Goat stuck in a fence? I called it a lot of names. I, I was sick of looking at'em.

David Hernandez:

Did it eventually shine at least?

MaskedAquaKitty:

It did, It only took 8,152.

David Hernandez:

Only eight thou you're so close to 10, 000. Oh my gosh.

MaskedAquaKitty:

125 hours, six minutes and two seconds.

David Hernandez:

my God. That's some dedication to get a shiny stuck in the fence.

MaskedAquaKitty:

on my starting soon screen, it is the first clip that plays, is me getting that shiny.

David Hernandez:

How excited were you when you got it?

MaskedAquaKitty:

Uh, headphone destroying loud. I'm a very loud person if it wasn't obvious. I think I broke the sound barrier when I got

David Hernandez:

Hahaha! Were you on stream with your friends, or were you still kind of just streaming alone at that time?

MaskedAquaKitty:

I was It's funny because, at the time, we were, I forgot how the conversation came up, but we're talking about what year we graduated high school. And, I'm like, I graduated 2018, and then the encounter started, and then I saw it. I think Squid was in the call, and a couple other people. Yeah, I think I was On call with people during Yeah, I was.

David Hernandez:

Oh, geez. I'm sure you Hahaha! They probably thought They probably thought something happened to you.

MaskedAquaKitty:

Well What I called shiny hunting with Arceus every hour. I'm like, guys, we've been, we've been here for an hour and 20, uh, 125 hours of, of togetherness because some people literally sat there the entire 125 hours worth of streams.

David Hernandez:

Oh, geez. That's some dedication right there.

MaskedAquaKitty:

And I took breaks from hunting this thing because my sanity was like, Non existent at one point. I actually, funny enough, I got Arceus during a, uh, I had a, uh, bit goal, not bit goal, uh, channel point goal for, I forget how much, I think it was a million, and it was a 12 hour stream of me just hunting this thing. And, so, I think it was around the 10 hour mark is when it showed up. And then I streamed for 14. I didn't even stream for 12. I was too excited. I streamed for 14. Because I think an hour of it was just me staring at the darn thing.

David Hernandez:

That's awesome. I'm glad finally got your shiny Arceus. That was, that's some dedication. I always say shiny hunters are a different breed because I get frustrated if I have to restart a legendary encounter. You guys are going for years sometimes, or days trying to get something to shine. It's, I admire y'all's dedication.

MaskedAquaKitty:

Each, each reset in BDSP takes a minute. The damn loading screen is so long.

David Hernandez:

So you talked about how, you know, you're streaming on Twitch and we alluded to a little bit. What made you want to do that? And how did you kind of find the friends you have now?

MaskedAquaKitty:

So, I'm pretty sure you had him on the, you had Lander Alpha on the podcast, So, I'm one of his mods. And, I was in his stream almost like every, every stream. So, and I went, you know, streaming Kyle looks fun. at the time he had a little, talk show after, after spotlight hour. He would do like an hour where he like asked people how, how they're enjoying Pokemon GO and stuff. I went on there and talked about how I was interested in streaming. And that if I had 50 followers, I would start streaming. The second I said that I hit 55. I, I, I spoke it into existence.

David Hernandez:

I was about to say, yeah.

MaskedAquaKitty:

So at that point I'm like, well, looks like I gotta start streaming. And I've been streaming pretty much ever since.

David Hernandez:

have you found like enjoyment in it? Cause I always see you laughing. I always hear you laughing. I always hear you having a good time with everybody.

MaskedAquaKitty:

I quite enjoy streaming. Normally, because of my work schedule, I literally get off of work and immediately start streaming, and that's kind of the better part of my day, is actually streaming, because work can be stressful sometimes.

David Hernandez:

So streaming is kind of a de stressor for you.

MaskedAquaKitty:

A little bit, yes.

David Hernandez:

I mean, it's something to look forward to because usually, I don't know if you're always, if you stream alone, but usually I see with other people, it's like, you know, you deal with, uh, I don't know what you do for work, but you deal with like a stressful work environment and you kind of go home and you got something to look forward to streaming a game you're playing with people and stuff like that. I'm pretty, it sounds like a good time.

MaskedAquaKitty:

It kind of keeps me, motivated. Because know some streamers struggle with, uh, Like, especially newer ones, where they don't, have anyone talking in the chat. So like, they don't exactly know what to say, and I'm still kinda there. Which is kinda why I like having at least someone to talk to in the call. And then it It starts with one, and then, oh god, there's five people in the call. When did this happen?

David Hernandez:

What does it mean to have those friends with y'all on the same call when you stream?

MaskedAquaKitty:

I'm very thankful for them. Like, don't think I would've, uh, I don't think I would've made it far, with streaming if I didn't have anyone to talk to. So, I'm very thankful for them.

David Hernandez:

You've been listening to As the Pokeball Turns. We're going to take a quick break. We'll be right back. So I know you have experience with Pokemon go. So when did you first start playing that?

MaskedAquaKitty:

I was in West Virginia at the time, I was on vacation. And I overheard that if you downloaded a Japanese, Google Play Store, you could get Pokemon Go a day early. So I did that. I essentially played pokemon Go since it was released.

David Hernandez:

It sounds like you're pretty excited for it to come out.

MaskedAquaKitty:

Oh, I was. Because it's Pokemon in the real world? What? That's crazy!

David Hernandez:

Right. Were you like one of the people who like, uh, stayed out late at night to like four in the morning? Like how dedicated were you when you first came out?

MaskedAquaKitty:

Yeah, that, yeah, I was up until 4 in the morning playing the game sometimes. Yeah, that was me.

David Hernandez:

Yeah. We all were.

MaskedAquaKitty:

Hear those stories about the people almost getting run over by cars because they're trying to catch something? Yeah, that's me.

David Hernandez:

Did you start with bubble sores? Well, I assume,

MaskedAquaKitty:

I, I picked Bulbasaur, yep.

David Hernandez:

uh,

MaskedAquaKitty:

I still, I actually still have it.

David Hernandez:

Really? You still have the

MaskedAquaKitty:

still have it. It's still a Bulbasaur and it's from West Virginia. like, like, I remember seeing a Snorlax on the radar and immediately bolting towards it. Yeah,

David Hernandez:

It still now, but yeah.

MaskedAquaKitty:

and that one I still have. I still have some of my original 2016 ones.

David Hernandez:

Oh, I'm so jealous. I

MaskedAquaKitty:

And I know a lot of people are like, why don't you just trade them to get a guaranteed lucky? But I'm like, but, but the memories!

David Hernandez:

Like, I remember when I was asleep and I saw like a Venusaur on my nearby. I'm like. Damn, I went to go for this Venusaur, ain't I? And I literally got out of my bed and had to jump over a fence because it was a different apartment complex. the Venus I I encountered the Venusaur. It ran away, unfortunately, because, uh, catch rates existed,

MaskedAquaKitty:

Catch rates exist. Yep. I,

David Hernandez:

to it, even if I didn't catch it.

MaskedAquaKitty:

I remember It was a similar story. It was a Blastoise. I got to the Blastoise. And I probably threw about 20 balls at it. And I ran out of Pokeballs.

David Hernandez:

Oh, no.

MaskedAquaKitty:

I ran out of Pokeballs. And so, I immediately made a stop, it was gone by then.

David Hernandez:

Yes, because that was before you could pay for it while you were on the encounter. That's right. Mm hmm.

MaskedAquaKitty:

So, I'm like, well, That sucks. I would've loved the Blastoise. Like three hours passed, and another Blastoise spawned. I caught that one.

David Hernandez:

Oh wow, so you got two Blastoise two dang, crazy.

MaskedAquaKitty:

It was three Blastoises in one day, it was crazy. There was a third one, it spawned off of a lure. And I remember, because I was playing Pokemon Go with a friend at the time, and They went to the bathroom, and a Blastoise spawned. And by the time they got back, the Blastoise wasn't there anymore.

David Hernandez:

poor thing.

MaskedAquaKitty:

And I'm like, wow, you missed the Blastoise. How does that make you feel?

David Hernandez:

Oh, what'd they say?

MaskedAquaKitty:

Oh, they weren't happy with They were not happy with me. It's like you didn't even tell me. I'm like, what was I supposed to do? Exactly

David Hernandez:

Open the door like, hey! There's a Blastoise over here! Get off the commode!

MaskedAquaKitty:

you want me to do? Oh god.

David Hernandez:

So, when it comes to Pokemon Go, have you had a chance to go to any in person events at all?

MaskedAquaKitty:

I actually went to GoFest last year.

David Hernandez:

Ooh, was that your first GoFest ever?

MaskedAquaKitty:

It was my first GoFest ever.

David Hernandez:

tell me about it. What was it like go to your first GoFest? In your backyard?

MaskedAquaKitty:

I lived in Jersey my whole life, and that the first time I've been to New York. We find it funny because, I would be struggling to figure out Gopher City, and then there's Squid, he's, he's, he's frickin swinging across the, like, like, this man, is miles ahead, cause he knows the city in and out, and I'm sitting here going, Help? I don't, I don't belong here!

David Hernandez:

I don't come the border too often.

MaskedAquaKitty:

What are these tall buildings? They don't exist in Jersey! Help! Oh But, but, GoFest was great because I actually got to see, like, that was the first time I actually saw a squid in person.

David Hernandez:

Really? Y'all never met before?

MaskedAquaKitty:

No, it was the first time I saw him in person. most of the people that I talked to, in the voice chat was the first time meeting them was in New York.

David Hernandez:

Also, like reunion.

MaskedAquaKitty:

Yeah, it was, yeah, that was kind of the best part for me was actually seeing the people I've talked to for

David Hernandez:

I know you're a mod for LanderAlpha. Did you get to meet him as well? I guess that was your first time meeting him as well? Mm hmm.

MaskedAquaKitty:

It was. He was streaming at the time because he has this whole, backpack setup. So like, he, his mobile, setup is insane. So it was the easiest way to spot him was just look for the guy with the backpack with wires coming out of it. He was not hard to find.

David Hernandez:

Right?

MaskedAquaKitty:

So, so yeah, there is a part of His, I think it was his day one stream that we bombarded his stream.

David Hernandez:

Really?

MaskedAquaKitty:

Yeah.

David Hernandez:

So y'all just look for him and then just surrounded him kind of thing? Or what y'all do?

MaskedAquaKitty:

Essentially that, I think it was like five of us and we all was like, Is that LandorAlpha? And then we just ran over there. But, but a lot of people did that to him because a lot of people were Like I said, like, first time I met a lot of people. Like, first time people got to meet him, and stuff like that.

David Hernandez:

Last question in regards to GoFest, you know, if somebody was on the fence of going, you know, what would you tell them?

MaskedAquaKitty:

I mean, if you like Pokemon Go, and it's something that you actively enjoy, I recommend going. If it's anything like last year, they literally had, this entire park was just Pokemon Go themed. Like they had giant like, the actual habitats had a physical landmark that you could physically see. It was pretty cool, because, you look at your phone like, Oh, look, that's cool, and then it's not there, but in this case, it was there! And plus, if you're like me and have talked to people for years and haven't seen them in person, and they're going, I think it's worth going. Just to see them and play Pokemon Go together because it's a fun time.

David Hernandez:

I got one last question before we close this interview. So, if somebody was going to come battle you, they're going to travel to New Jersey, and you can bring a team of six Pokemon, what six Pokemon would you bring to the battle?

MaskedAquaKitty:

the funny thing is, I think I actually have something that has the six Pokemons I would bring. Um,

David Hernandez:

Really?

MaskedAquaKitty:

yeah,

David Hernandez:

Like, a little graphic and stuff like

MaskedAquaKitty:

Little graphic thing. So, my favorite type of Pokemons, at least from what it looks like, I like the Pokemons that are, not many people like, plus, are not like, the strongest. For example, Volbeat is my favorite bug type. When was the last time you heard someone talk about Volbeat?

David Hernandez:

Never. I've never heard anybody talk about

MaskedAquaKitty:

It is my I, I, No. You can ask anyone on my stream. I'd love that Pokemon. I'd constantly defend that Pokemon. I would bring a Volbeat and probably lose, but I will bring it. I don't care.

David Hernandez:

Is that your favorite Pokemon, Volbeat? Oh,

MaskedAquaKitty:

If it wasn't obvious.

David Hernandez:

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Volbeat.

MaskedAquaKitty:

And not because of the damn, ugh, the creep, uh, copypasta.

David Hernandez:

Oh, copy pasta.

MaskedAquaKitty:

Please,

David Hernandez:

I'm the AL.

MaskedAquaKitty:

I'm sick of hearing it. Because it was my favorite Pokemon before then. And then everyone's like, Wow, you only like it because it's like, No! No! Not my child!

David Hernandez:

could you do that to my boy?

MaskedAquaKitty:

Exactly. But, uh, so it would be, Obviously Vaporeon.

David Hernandez:

Sure.

MaskedAquaKitty:

It would be Volbeat. Venusaur, because it's my favorite starter.

David Hernandez:

Gotta go the old classic. Yeah. Yeah.

MaskedAquaKitty:

I find it hilarious that my favorite Pokémon probably Blaziken. Because, it is I also play Pokemon Unite. It is my Pokemon Unite main, plus I liked Blaziken. When I replayed Emerald, I picked Torchic instead of, Sceptile, and I fell in love with Blaziken more.

David Hernandez:

Blaziken's hard beat too. It's pretty cool.

MaskedAquaKitty:

It is really cool. I love Blaziken, so I would have a Blaziken. Another Pokemon, I don't think many people like, but I like, I like Greedent.

David Hernandez:

Oh, wow. That's a unique choice.

MaskedAquaKitty:

He's just a chucky little squirrel, I love him. I also play him in Unite too, so it's kind of a little, but, doesn't get much love, probably because, oh great, it's another, it's another early round rodent. I'm like, no, he's better than that.

David Hernandez:

Who would be your last one?

MaskedAquaKitty:

That's the one that I'm like, that's the hard one, cause I'm like, There's so many Pokemons I like, it's like, I don't think I actually have this damn Cause I'm, like, I made one of these because, as a streamer, a lot of people ask Well, what's your favorite Gen 5 fire type? So I literally have, forget the website, but it literally, you can do that. Like, you literally pick Gen 5 favorite fire type, and then it would be on that list. If I probably had to pick a 6, it might be Electivire because, obviously, Gen 4 is my favorite generation. I didn't have Electivire until like, Literally late game, I had an old childhood friend trade me an Electabuzz. And I evolved it to Electivire. And I didn't know at the time that Electivire is physical attacker and not a special attacker. So it was a special Electivire.

David Hernandez:

I'm sure that went pretty well.

MaskedAquaKitty:

Honestly, it did! And then when I made it physical, I'm like, wow, it just, it just kills more. So So I have fond memories of Electivire, so yeah, I would say Electivire would be number six.

David Hernandez:

Well, awesome. Massaka Quitty, that is the interview. Thank you for coming on the show. Before you go, if people want to, like, watch your stream, if they want to connect with you, where can they go? By all means, please plug away.

I'm not promising anything yet, but I'm working on it.

David Hernandez:

She'll tell you the Vaporeon copypasta she's talking about.

MaskedAquaKitty:

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Please no. That, that, that, I, Oh my god. I had one person come to my stream Like, did you know that in terms of Banned. They didn't even finish. didn't even I, I'm like, listen. I'm like, listen. You are not ruining my favorite Pokemon. I think I un I think I un banned them eventually. But, I, I was not having it.
